Parallel Processing Architectures

Course Instructor: Nicolae Tapus

The main objective of this lecture is the learning of basic concepts concerning parallel processing architectures. During this lecture students learn to analyze parallel processing models, as well as synchronization issues in parallel and distributed systems.
Lecture Description: Evolution of parallel processing systems. Parallelism. Indicators for evaluating parallel structures. The Flynn taxonomy. The Shore taxonomy. Structural classification. General characteristics of parallel processing systems. Mathematical models of parallel computation. Granularity of parallel structures: the relationships between parallel architectures and parallel algorithms. Parallel computation limits. Levels of parallelism. Synchronization in parallel and distributed systems. Parallel system architectures. Cluster computing.
